Michelangeli is one of the greatest pianists but I think his Chopin is one of the coldest and lifeless I’ve ever heard. If somebody tells me that’s a good ballade, he needs to listen to more interpretations. I’ve heard only the first Ballade from Bolet, already had this argument with a fan of him once. Richter is a mixed bag, I think he was better at other composers. I’ve been very disappointed with the Chopin I’ve heard from Busoni, Paderewski and Rachmaninov. But he was born in 1930 and his career started after the 1950-s. Moravec is one of the greatest Chopin interpreters. Where can I hear Scriabin and Debussy playing Chopin?! I forgot about Friedman, thanks for the list. (Koczalski, for instance, interpolated his own improvised preludes and postludes (and interludes) to join up disparate pieces together in concert.)Ī bit like jazz today - you go to see your hero, not hear him play Oscar. Because, in that era, many of the pianists came ahead of the composers - people flocked to hear their heroes (and what they would do to and with the music), not the composers. The only question is whether you like what they do.

Same for Horowitz, Cortot, Koczalski, Michelangeli and some (not all) of the other pianists that have been mentioned. I prefer Rachmaninov playing Chopin and Schumann than Rachmaninov playing Rachmaninov, but there are those who believe that his Chopin & Schumann are beyond the pale, and that he's only fit to play himself.īut he's recognizably the same pianist, whatever he plays. They may be unique in their own way but unique doesn't make good.Isn't it all subjective? (Ignoring their wrong notes, of course, which they disdained to put right, even if they could.) But let's see any other of these golden age pianists? I haven't heard any good Chopin from them.
